Psychological Dimensions of Astrology

Winner: 2016 MA Dissertation Prize

Was the induction of the term 'psychological astrology' a linguistic misunderstanding? Were psychological characteristics introduced into astrology as late as in the 20th century? And do English-speaking and German-speaking astrologers mean the same thing when they speak about 'psychological astrology'?

Astrid Leimlehner

This presentation will raise and discuss these questions and will analyse early 20th century astrology texts for their psychological qualities. Furthermore, this talk will question the reasonableness of the expression 'psychological astrology' by arguing that ancient, so-called 'traditional' astrology also has psychological dimensions. The use of German primary sources shall raise an interest in and awareness of astrological currents outside the English-speaking world.

Astrid Bernadette Leimlehner, a native Austrian, studied psychology at the University of Salzburg (1990-1998) and for the MA in Cultural Astronomy and Astrology (2009-2014). After her graduation with distinction in 2015, she won the 2016 Alumni Association MA CAA Dissertation Prize. Astrid spoke at the Sophia Centre conferences in 2016 and 2017. Her current scholarly focus lies on writing up these papers for publication and on researching connections between astrological and cartomantic practices with playing cards. Furthermore, her translation of Nick Campion's History of Astrology into German is in the planning stage.
