Domestic Shrines and the Construction of Sacred Space among Spiritually Inclined Women

In his attempt to define the nature of sacred space, the sociologist Émile Durkheim distinguished the sacred from the profane, arguing that 'the sacred and the profane cannot occupy the same space space'.
This lecture draws on research conducted in 2013 involving interviews with a group of women who maintained domestic shrines, together with a reflexive consideration of my own domestic shrines. The research asks whether such home shrines may be understood as sacred spaces and what this might reveal, if anything, about the construction of sacredness within everyday domestic environments.

Liz Hathway
Liz Hathway is a graduate of the MA in Cultural Astronomy and Astrology at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David. A dedicated student of astrology since the 1980s, she holds the Diploma of the Faculty of Astrological Studies (DFAstrolS) and is a Qualified Horary Craftswoman, trained at the John Frawley School of Traditional Astrology. Liz is a consulting astrologer and teaches online courses in myth and mundane astrology for the Hermetic Cosmos School of Astrology in 's-Hertogenbosch. She is Cosmic Intelligence Agency, agent 115. Her first book, Daughter of Saturn: An Auto-Ethnographic Enquiry into Contemporary Astrological Practice based on her master's dissertation, was recently published by the Sophia Centre Press.
