Dark and Light: The role of sunlight and shadow in culture
Seventeenth Annual Sophia Centre Conference
Faculty of Humanities and the Performing Arts
University of Wales Trinity Saint David
Lampeter 13 July 2019
Welcome to the conference page for the Seventeenth Annual Sophia Centre conference. The Sophia Centre is a research and teaching centre in the Faculty of Humanities and the Performing Arts at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David. Its remit is the study of the way that we live in the cosmos.
Through night and day, sunlight and shadow, full moon and new moon, the sky has instilled in our lives the contrast of light and dark. Light is often associated with that which is clear, knowable and thus understandable while dark often symbolises the mysterious or unknowable or something to be feared. Changing patterns of light and dark emphasise life and death, divine essences and mysterious sacredness, the shadows of the mind, and simple views of good and evil.
This conference will explore how the boundaries between, and nature of, light and dark, have been imagined, represented and used in a variety of time periods and cultures.
The Sophia Centre includes within its remit consideration of how human beings strive to live in harmony with the cosmos.
