Adventures in Time and Place

Janet Carrol

The Sophia Centre has just held its first Student Photo Competition. The call for submissions went to students and alumni from the 2014 intake onwards with over eighteen entrants submitting thirty-three photos in all. Once the images were collected into an online exhibition, voting commenced with tutors, alumni and students alike choosing their top three photos. The overall consensus was that the photographs were so good it had been difficult to choose from amongst the many stunning images.

The winners were as follows:

1st place to No. 205 'Pebble in the Sand' by Grace Cassar from Malta

2nd place to No. 214 'Caballitos de Tortora Appointment with Sunset' by Madeleine Marchand from Switzerland

3rd place to No. 221 'Moonset Over the Lleyn Penisular' by Ingrid O'Donnell from Tywyn Gwynedd.

During the Summer School and the Annual Sophia Centre Conference the photographs and their stories were on exhibit for all to see. Eva Young and Madeleine Marchand were in Bath, with Grace Cassar, Ingrid O'Donnell and I coming into Summer School via WebEx in order to join the three winners' together so they could each share their personal stories behind their winning photo to all who were in attendance at Summer School. Later, during the Annual Sophia Centre Conference, several of the photos sold and the funds were then donated to our Sophia Centre Alumni Association.

Our many thanks go out to all the students and alumni who participated by sharing their photos and the stories behind them, to all those who participated by voting, to those who supported this event from behind the scenes, to the Sophia Centre for graciously donating the Amazon gift vouchers to the top three winners, to those that helped at the Summer School and during the Sophia Centre 'Worship of the Stars' Conference with the photo exhibition, to Eva Young for her conception of this creative photographic exchange, to Frances Clynes for providing the blank slate for the online exhibition, to Nick Campion for allowing Eva and I to bring this to fruition, and to the University of Wales Trinity Saint David for bringing us all together.
