Welcome to the Sophia Centre Review, a new periodic online publication dedicated to the subject areas covered by the Sophia Centre at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David. As many of you will know already, the Sophia Centre is concerned with the history and philosophy of astrology and cultural astronomy in all regions and in all time periods.

It's no exaggeration to say that the current health and economic crisis is the first truly global crisis. Previous plagues, and even two World Wars, never touched the whole planet. In this respect I notice this letter on page 30 of The Times on 28 March 2020.

I am a student at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, pursuing graduate studies in Cultural Astronomy through the Sophia Centre. Currently, I am engaged in research for my MA disseration, which is focused upon "dark sky friendly" LED streetlight retrofits.

Patrick Curry is a a tutor in the Sophia Centre at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David and was formerly Senior Lecturer first at Bath Spa University and then the University of Kent. He runs the 9th House website, which posts academic resources on astrology, and is also a world-renowned expert on the life an writing of J.R.R. Tolkein.
