Sophia Project Research

The Sophia Centre has an active and unique programme of research. For full details see our University of Wales Trinity Saint David Research Pages, but also scroll down to see our options, and levels of research through the Centre. We welcome all inquiries.

  • All students taking modules in Cultural Astronomy and Astrology learn research skills as part of their work. The research skills we teach include qualitative research (using interviews and questionnaires) and measuring astronomical alignments at monuments, both ancient and modern

  • Students in some modules (Researching Contemporary Cosmologies; Sacred Geography; Skyscapes, Cosmology and Archaeology) are required to conduct a research project

  • Students who complete the MA in Cultural Astronomy and Astrology write a 15,000 word dissertation based on an independent supervised research project

  • We offer the MA in Research (MRes) to applicants who can already demonstrate a record of relevant research, typically at MA level. Students take three MA modules and write a 30,000 word dissertation based on an independent supervised research project

  • We can provide supervision in PhD research to applicants who can demonstrate relevant research at MA level, and have achieved the highest grades in their dissertation. Students write a 100,000 word dissertation based on an independent supervised research project. There are no required classes and so no PhD program in the sense understood in the USA

  • Honourary Research Fellows are appointed for a period of five years and are given access to University facilities in order to pursue independent research. Applicants should have a relevant PhD or a track record of peer reviewed publication. Please approach Dr Nicholas Campion, the Sophia Centre director, for further information

  • We publish research from both within and beyond the Sophia Centre via Spica, the postgraduate research journal, Culture and Cosmos, and the Sophia Centre Press
